Babies (2010)

Who loves babies?
Aw look at the adorable little babies. Who could resist their charms? Seriously, who doesn't love babies? In fact, what if there was a documentary about babies, then how could anyone not possibly like the movie? After all, everyone loves babies, right? Or if your not really a baby person, then there's always puppies and kittens playing with the infants. Would that be enough for you to watch the movie then? At least that's what Thomas Balmes thinks anyway.
For those who are unfamiliar with this movie, "Babies" is essentially a documentary about four babies from different parts of the world. Where Thomas Balmes and his camera crew chronicle the first year of their lives, from their births to the first day they take their first steps. Unlike most documentaries, there's no narration during this movie. In fact, the parents of these kids are rarely seen most of the time, as the documentary truly shows you the exploits of these little infants.
During the film, audiences will undoubtedly be entranced by these infants charms and enthusiasms. Although the babies do cry a lot throughout the film, you can't help but love them as you watch them interact with the world around them. I was laughing so much when I saw how Bayar, Mari and Hattie interacted with the cats they lived with, as it was almost too precious to watch. Heck, even the scene where Panijao plays with her pet puppy is very cute and funny.
I guess by now, many of you can tell that I did like this movie. Like I said earlier, who doesn't love babies? In fact, you'd have to not like children in general to hate this film. Therefore, the question you should be asking me isn't about whether or not I liked this film. No, you should be asking me if this film even should be considered a documentary. The short answer to that is no but then again, what would "Babies" be classified as if not as a documentary? To that question, I honestly don't know.
As much as "Babies" was entertaining to watch, it just didn't feel like a documentary. It certainly wasn't as informative as one would expect a documentary to be, and I didn't learn anything new about babies from watching this. Other than the fact that they cry a lot, and they seem to love animals too. Therefore, I'm not sure if "Babies" qualifies as a documentary, as the whole movie seemed like it was more of a culmination of home videos chronicling these little tyke's lives. You know, the kind of home videos mommies and daddies typically take of their children during special events of their lives. (i.e. Their first word, step, and etc. Or even a school play or sporting event they're in for instance) Yeah, that's kind of how the film seemed like to me. It was as if Thomas Balmes just collected a series of home videos of four different babies, and turned them into one documentary ensemble. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slandering this movie at all nor am I saying it's a bad documentary to watch. Far from it actually, as I loved every minute of this movie.
"Babies" certainly isn't your traditional type of documentary, but it's rather charming. It's almost as if Thomas Balmes knew that the personality and charm of these little babies alone, would make the film worth watching. Overall, unless you absolutely can't stand children, then you'll love every minute of this movie. I highly recommend it.

Hey Steven! Told you I was back.....
Okay so I have a weakness for both babies and documentaries! I haven't seen this, only advertisement for it, becuase I have been busy with my BABY nephews in my life! LOL
But after reading your review I gotta catch this! Good job and boy does it ever feel good to read YOUR movie reviews. I think I have a lot to catch up on! Can't wait!
Thanks Steven. I have to say it's nice to be missed! Thank you so much for your warm welcome back...
Yeah, they love me a lot, I say in all modestly! LOL No, they are great little boys and such a blessing. I never thought becoming an Aunt could change me life so drastically...and ALL for good. However the dirty diapers I get volunteered to do...well I can't wait until this potty training takes effect!
Jeremiah is 2 and looooves to say my name and Obadiah is 1 who although doesn't say much sure smiles ALL the time! And no I don't mind you asking. They are the apples of my eyes and I tell EVERYONE about them...I definitely will have to write a hub about them...get a few pictures and make you all fall in love with them as well! Thanks for the great idea, Steven!
Where is my head? Sorry, but obadiah is not one. not yet at least. He is nine months old....and growing!
Your writing has gotten even better, and I just want to compliment you on that. Also, I was wondering about this movie and you've given me the encouragement now to go see it. The music behind that trailer is awesome, too! I can never get enough of babies. I'm one who actually loves to see people's baby pictures of themselves and their relatives, so I think I will love this movie. Thanks, Steven, you've done it again!

Do know why this movie is so secure? I live in Japan and cant wait for the films to arrive here and usually find the movies streaming online. I never download, but if it is streaming I feel it is OK to watch. Why is this movie not available online?
WOW!... cute pix... love em... great hub too :)
dude, great hub idea. you beat me to it :)
here in Phoenix, parents are taking their babies to see this movie. seriously, the theatre is filled with babies. it is supposedly 'Baby's first film'.
rating UP. i only wish there was a "Cute" button ;) good job!
Hey Steven! I've only seen the previews for this and it does look good. I'm glad that you've given it a thumbs up. When I save enough minutes at the end of the week, I'll be sure to watch this. Just a thought -- it's noted as a documentary possibly because the film displays how all babies go through the same stages throughout their lives, regardless of race, culture or where they live. It's interesting to me from a scientific nature (yea, psychology background and tons of real life experience). :) Thanks for another great review! xoxo
Never mind me...I'm just that shadow lurking around... :D xox
