Best Horror Movies and Monster Films of 2012: Featuring New Trailers for "Dark Shadows" and "Piranha 3dd"
88Introduction
Who said horror and monster movies were dead in Hollywood? Not me. Hell, from doing quite a bit of research, it seems like we have a lot of horror and monster films on the horizon. Too many in fact. However, let's get started here shall we. As some of my readers know, I've taken the liberty to categorize my film previews this year in perspective categories, in hopes of helping my readers find the movies that best suits them. Unfortunately, this also means you might start to see some of these movies become placed in other preview hubs (i.e. Godzilla and Prometheus in "Science Fiction film previews of 2012" in addition to this one). This is done because some of these films do fall into other categories besides horror and monster, and I can't assume everyone that reads my previews on something like "Dramas and Independent films of 2012" will necessarily read my preview hub on "Comedies of 2012." Therefore, I have to go by the logic that all these hubs are being viewed by various people that didn't read the previous preview hubs...if that makes sense.
Like my normal preview hubs, you'll find each film with it's perspective plot synopsis and cast listings; while providing a trailer for them as well. Unfortunately, some of these films have yet to release a trailer, but I'll be updating this hub until December 31, 2011, so be sure to check here frequently.
Remember that release dates are subject to change, so be sure to check your local listings for details.
Update #1: In a bizarre twist of fate, "Piranha 3DD" has been delayed until 2012. Originally set to come out later this year, but Dimension films has suddenly decided to pull the plug on that plan, and pushed the movie until next year instead. No official word has come out to explain why it's delayed until next year, but I'll be sure to keep you posted in case anything changes.
Update #2: Unfortunately, Legendary Studios has pushed back production on the Godzilla reboot until 2014 according to imdb. Although there's no official explanation released by Warner Bros. or Legendary to explain this, but it's rumored that it has a lot to do with keeping within Legendary and WB's plans to only release so many block busters per year in order to keep from flooding the market with them all at once. I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but I'll be sure to keep you posted if anything changes.
Update #3: In light of the recent success of "Paranormal Activity 3", Paramount executives have gone on record to say that there will be another sequel to this franchise after all. And with keeping with it's tradition of releasing a "Paranormal Activity" movie once every year since 2009, it looks like 2012 is certainly no exception to this rule.
Update #4: "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" has been delayed until 2013, due production delays.

when i saw the trailer and poster of Crack Whore i thought that Megan Fox was the main actress because of the similar looks....to bad she isn't. or is that going to far?
glad that i can point it out lol
Wow you certainly did a lot of research and I;m glad you did, I'm really looking forward to all of these awesome looking movies!!! Great hub!
These movies seem to range from horror to horrible. Hotel translyvania and Hansel n gredal seemed to be targeted for kids. Underworld series is good but I see no reason for it to be in 3-D.
the "Found Footage gimmick is getting old. I am a bit confused about Promethus. Didn't Ridley Scott almost ruin the Alien franchise with his Alien on a prison planet clap-trap? Lets not give him another shot please.
I am looking forward to Dark Shadows and Resident Evil.
I can not wait for World War Z, Prometheus, and the new Amityville Horror movie. The others i might just wait for on blu-ray. Good stuff, looks like 2012 has a promising line up on films. great work. voted up and interesting.
Oh, I've gotta see "Crack Whore"!!! It appears to be gross out squared. Anyway, who said horror films are dead? They seem to make more of those than any other genre, including romantic comedies, equally sickening perhaps. Very good job, dude. Thanks. Later!
piranha 3dd is awesome!!!! always love the dead movies no matter how many they do! Underworld and resident evil are good but there very similar and rip each other off. Halloween is awesome with rob zombie much better then the original and world war z sounds awesome as well. Another great hub!
Excellent list. I'd like to watch the second Piranha movie.
they delayed Piranha 3dd probably to get some more "assets"
ParaNorman? sounds like a SciFi movie. or an SNL skit. or like something i wont be seeing lol
Miley Cyrus is Dracula's daughter just cracked me up. i'm still laughing five minutes later
chronicle looks awesome!!! Amityville really those movies suck!
I can see myself watching most of these movies, even the direct to video one and there are many. Well, maybe not the Miley Cyrus one, I have an aversion to her an The Bieber, but the others, yes please.
Thank you so much for the list. Voted up.
Wow you certainly did a lot of research and I;m glad you did, I'm really looking forward to all of these awesome looking movies!!!
"Abe Lincoln, Vampire Hunter" looks like a hoot. And I'm a sucker for anything "Amityville," even though most of the films made from the story have been terrible.
I gotta say, most of these look pretty decent. I LOVED the book, John Dies at the End. The movie is at Sundance soon, and will be epic. Prometheus is Ridley Scott's third Sci-Fi, and I expect it to be at the same level as Blade Runner and Alien.
Lots of good ones coming out. Many should make lists like http://www.filmcrave.com/list_top_movie.php?yr=201 for the best of 2012. Nice write up.
Hmm ok first thing here is that the trailer for Abraham Lincoln the vampire hunter you used here is not the trailer for the movie , just the book. That being said, i find it quite interesting that so many horror movies are going to come out this(even though some of them are actually b movies). I like the way you took time to present your list with detail
Peace!!
im most def looking forward to the silent hill movie and the resident evil movie.... im a huge fan of both games and the movies so this is going to be a good year for movies i think :)
You have an incredible list. I'm the ultimate scare-me-so-badly-I'm-afraid-to-go-to-sleep-alone movie fan. You have movies I haven't even heard of but will definitely find and watch. Great Hub, thanks for the movie info.
Horror is my favorite movie genre and I had no idea so many are coming out soon! I will be avoiding the Woman in Black though because it has been my favorite ghost story BOOK for years. Afraid the movie will alter my imagination of the characters and story. Highly recommend the book! I will be watching for some of the others you mentioned. Really thorough and informative HUB on an interesting topic.
It's looking like the best year in horror in a long time - World War Z and Cabin in the Woods being the two I'm most looking forward to watching in 2012. I'll probably alsoend up watching yet another Paranormal Activity film, even though they're pretty much all the same. The success of Woman in Black, The Devil Inside and Chronicle gets horror off to a good start - I just hope some of them manage to make it to my top movie list at the end of the year and on http://www.filmcrave.com/list_top_movie.php?yr=201
Are you kidding me........ my name is London Knight. I am the 2ed leading expert in America to date. I have the true crime photos from Amity Ville. and documents. I have talk to Defoe. I have been in the paranormal field for 16 years of my life. and worked on some of the most well know cases out there, this was not then nor will it ever be a demon cases. you guys truly need to read my book and see the crime photos for your self's on the Amity Ville case. let the town and the dead rest in piece.
please do not get me wrong I love horror , hell i due horror books. but some times the dead is best left alone.and Amity Ville, well the truth of it is just this. Defeo was a mad man. with a lust for drugs and money. a cold blooded killer. nothing more.

I'm really looking forward to Godzilla now that I know Gareth Edwards is directing. I was really impressed with what he did with 'Monsters' and I'm liking the noises coming from the producers. The rest I can take or leave, unless I see a particularly good review.
