Catfish movie: Documentary about a guy meeting and dating a girl online through facebook

"Catfish" is probably one of the most unique films I've ever seen. Although I don't know if I can agree with some critics that say this is the type of film Alfred Hitchcock would direct, as this movie doesn't seem to be the type of movie he would be involved in. Especially considering it lacks the suspensful thriller and deeply psychological moments that Hitchcock tends generate in cinema. However, it's a very powerful thought provoking film for those that yearn to see it. The movie is essentially a documentary about one man who becomes friends with a eight year old girl on Facebook. Now, before you all start throwing false accusations and asking why the hell is a grown man friends with a little girl on a social networking site, please hear me out on this before jumping to conclusions. Like I said before, he becomes friends with a little girl on this site and eventually he becomes good friends with her mother as well. All seems fine, as he has various brief conversations on the phone with the mother. However, things really get interesting when he starts a long distance love affair with the elder sister, Megan, who is allegedly around his age.

Take in mind at this point of the story, he hasn't met any of these people in real life, and everything that he knows about them is based on what they've told him on the phone and through Facebook. As his friends film his online affair with this girl, they decide to take a cross country road trip to meet this person. Now, I can't divulge or tell you what they find during this little trip, but lets just say it'll really shock you. Trust me, it speaks volumes about our current times, in regards to online dating and possibly some of the dangers behind it.

Although I wouldn't go as far as to say that "Catfish" is a Hitchcock-ish film, I will say it's a great thought provoking movie for what it is. After all, with the dangers of social networking and people meeting each other online all the time, it's easy to believe in a pretty lie. It's like the old saying goes, "Online, you can be whoever you want." Therefore, how would you know the person your talking to is really who they claim to be? That's what makes this film so compelling as it speaks volumes about the dangers of online dating, and how it can have a negative impact on our lives. Sure, there are some cases where it works out but for everyone that does, there's like a thousand that don't.

Overall, I can't say anymore without giving away the movie, but you should definitely check it out if your yearning to see a different type of film that speaks true about our modern times. Hence, I would have to give this film a three and a half out of four. "Catfish" may not be as great as it was advertised to be, but it's definitely a thought provoking film about our modern times.
