Hall Pass

Who wants a hall pass from their marriage?
To all you married men out there, I have a few questions to ask you. Are you bored with the woman you have now? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to sleep with another hot girl that came your way again, who wasn't your wife. However, you can't because you don't to cheat on your wife, right? Well, what if your wife gave you a hall pass? A hall pass from your marriage for entire week, where you were allowed to do whatever you wanted; which includes having sex with other girls. Would you want to take advantage of that?
Well such a strange coincidence happens to Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis), as their wives grow tired of how they're always talking obsessively about sex with other girls. Seriously, these guys talk more about sex than a teenager that just hit puberty, as that's basically all these buffoons talk about. Hell, I don't know what's worse. Two forty year old guys checking out girls half their age, or watching these idiots making proverbial a**es out of themselves trying to score with every hot girl that crosses their path. Seriously, it's pathetic, as these guys don't even know how to talk to girls. In fact, at one point in the film, I asked myself what the hell did their wives see in them exactly? Did they just date them out of pity? Seriously, a damn elementary school kid would probably know more about talking to women than these clowns, and that's just freaking sad.
Don't get me wrong, I would never gloat or take happiness in somebody's misfortune. However, these guys are freaking idiots. To make matters interesting, Rick and Fred aren't the only ones taking advantage of this whole hall pass scenario, as they're wives decide to get in on the fun too. Unlike the guys, their wives seem to show no problem landing a couple of guys that seem highly interested in them sexually. Hell, Fred's wife, Grace (Christina Applegate), manages to hook up with a young minor league baseball player, whom is half her age. Which begs me ask this again, what do their wives see in them?
Anyways, to get back to the story at hand, it seems Rick and Fred fail to gain any interest in any of these young girls to go out with them. Gee, could it be that young college girls aren't interested in men that are old enough to be their dads? By the way, most of the girls that Rick and Fred target are young college girls; instead of going for women around their own ages. Luckily, their old friend, Coakley (Richard Jenkins), is somewhat of an old school ladies man, and helps our protagonists in their quest to get laid before the hall pass expires. Does his advice work? Not exactly, as Fred ends up with a girl that suffers from bowel problems, and Rick luckily manages to find his own girl without Coakley's help. Now, I won't go on any further, as I don't want to give away too much of the plot. However, let's just say it's highly predictable.
To be honest, I thought the film had it's moments, and I'll even admit it was funny at times too. Particularly when Fred gets caught by the police, when he's masturbating in his car. I know it sounds gross, but it's a very funny scene. Plus, I loved Stephen Merchant's scene, where he envisions what would happen if he was granted a hall pass from his wife, as it's classic. Unfortunately, the rest of film was somewhat of a rip off of other films like "Old School", where you see a bunch of old guys trying to act like young college party animals. However, it's fairly decent for what it is.
Overall, I wouldn't go out on a limb to say this is a bad film, nor is it anywhere near as bad as I expected it to be. Therefore, I would have to give this film a two and a half out of four. It's definitely worth a rental, but I wouldn't see this in a movie theater.

Haha, no problem. I had a feeling I was close.
Haha totally. Those movies are bad but I know that I will end up seeing the next two. Thanks for reading them and I'll be reading more of you too!
nice review.....i will wait until it hits dvd, the farrelly brothers have very uneven movies....i thought fever pitch was their last good movie....so my question is hall pass better or worse than fever pitch? voted up
good to know...thanks for answering my question
I love Owen Wilson. I think I will see this over the next few days. Thanks!
Thanks for stating what I had assumed watching the previews. Thanks but no thanks to this film-not even a redbox rental, LOL
I was curious about this sort of lame sounding movie, I'll admit. Like I was wondering....would it actually be funny, or just more like an annoying cliche? I guess it's sort of both things (?) I'll just rent, thanks..like you suggest..or maybe even borrow from the library, for free...

Haha, you said predictable, so I'm going to guess that in the end they may get laid but they realize that their wives are the only people they want to be with? If that's the case then this movie begins and ends exactly the same way with no major outcomes and no life changing events. I don't see why that's so popular now. I liked your review, good job! It was well written and kept me interested the whole way through.
