Why Did I Get Married Too?

Have you ever been in love with someone so much that the person you love can sometimes drive you completely and utterly insane? Even to the point where you start to question yourself asking, "Why did I get married?" Well such is the case in Tyler Perry's new romantic comedy, "Why Did I Get Married Too?" However, one wouldn't know it was a romantic comedy from watching the movie or the trailers, but Tyler Perry certainly didn't mind promoting it that way through various sites like imdb and many others. Although to be fair, it did have comedic moments in it, but hardly enough to be deemed a comedy as Tyler Perry wants you to believe. It's more of a drama if anything else. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I just think that Mr. Perry needs to reevaluate the definition of a romantic comedy.

Before I get into this review, I must admit that I've never seen the first movie of this sequel, nor do I care enough to after seeing this film. From watching the many trailers for this movie, I have to say I was very stoked about seeing it. As the premise and the entire plot seemed not only interesting, but it sounded like it could be one of the best movies of the year when I saw the trailers. Sadly, this film doesn't live up to my expectations.

Sure, the beginning starts off strong as it shows four couples going away to their annual favorite resort, where they have a long tradition of staying there to rest and relax. Oh and they also have another custom where on the last night they stay at the resort, each couple stands up on a podium to discuss why did they get married to honor their marriages. Unfortunately, things don't go according to plan exactly, as each couple seems to display various problems ranging from infidelity to severe trust issues. One couple even goes through financial troubles, as her new husband is unable to find a job after moving to Atlanta. Indeed, this trip that originally starts off as a celebration of these couple's celebrating their marriages, turns out to be a ploy to mask how utterly miserable each couple truly is in their perspective relationships.

Like I said before, I wanted to like this movie as the trailers and plot synopsis sounded quite promising. However, that wasn't the case, as the ending of the movie itself offers very little to no closure for most of the characters. While offering closure for only one couple, Patricia (Janet Jackson) and Gavin (Malik Yoba), in this entire movie, but they're relationship wasn't even centralized in the story throughout most of the film. In fact, they never emphasized on the troubles of their relationship until halfway through the movie. However, I understand Tyler Perry's desire to create an alleged romantic comedy where the audience would be guessing which couple would have the most problems to work out. Sadly, the end result of his attempt ends in disaster.

Hence, the other hardships and closure issues never get worked out for the other couples. As it seems like they built up everyone else's relationship up to a point in the movie, where you'll be questioning how will they get their issues resolved. Making you wonder constantly about each couple's welfare but in the end, the other couples get a rushed ending that quite frankly doesn't bode well for me.

If that wasn't bad enough, the pacing issues for this movie is simply ridiculous as well. At the beginning, the film tends to drag it's feet. Dragging and retreading various issues over again repeatedly like a drum, as if Mr. Perry assumed the audience would quickly forget the woos of each couple so quickly. Then when it gets to halfway through the movie, everything just gets rushed. As if Mr. Perry wanted to make up for the pacing issues of the beginning, he decides to make the later half of the movie go by too quickly. Thus, causing a lame half a** rushed ending for all of the couples.

Although to be fair, I will admit this film does have it's moments.  Like the relationship struggles between the highly insecure and untrusting wife, Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White), was pretty funny to watch.  As Marcus would revel in his new found success as a highly publicized NFL commentator.  Unfortunately, this also prompts Marcus to flirt with many young girls too, that makes his wife Angela very angry and untrusting.  Normally, I would never laugh over something like this, but the way Tyler Perry portrays their relationship makes it too histarical to watch.  Heck, if it wasn't for them, this movie should've never been classified as a romantic comedy.  As Angela and Marcus, were the only couple bringing the comedy to this otherwise dramatic movie.

Overall, I would probably wait to see this film on video or wait until it comes out on basic cable, as this movie is so not worth seeing in a movie theater.  Sure, it has it's moments, and the beginning starts off rather well.  However, the ending and rushed story developments completely kill what could have been a great movie.
